The Naganathaswamy Temple at Keezhperumpallam is one of the nine sacred Navagraha temples of Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Ketu. Located about 3 km from Poompuhar and 20 km from Mayiladuthurai in the Nagapattinam district, this ancient shrine is also known as Ketu Sthalam and Keezhperumpallam . The presiding deity is Lord Shiva worshipped as Naganathaswamy, with his consort Parvati depicted as Soundaryanayaki .
The temple is believed to have been built during the Chola period and later expanded by the Vijayanagar and Nayak rulers. The name "Keezhperumpallam" translates to "the lower big village" — Keezh (lower), Peru (big), and Pallam (village or habitation). The temple is located on the banks of the Cauvery River and is closely associated with the nearby town of Poompuhar, the ancient Chola port city .
The Legend of Ketu: According to Hindu mythology, when Vishnu severed Rahu's head with his discus during the churning of the cosmic ocean, the head became Rahu and the body became Ketu. Ketu is considered a malefic planet in Vedic astrology, associated with spirituality, detachment, and moksha (liberation). It is believed that Ketu worshipped Lord Shiva at this sacred site to be relieved of the sin of deception and to gain divine status among the Navagrahas. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva blessed him and granted him a place among the nine planets .
Significance of Ketu Worship: Ketu is regarded as the planet that governs spiritual enlightenment, ancestral karma, and liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Devotees facing adverse effects of Ketu in their horoscope — such as health issues, financial losses, marital discord, and spiritual unrest — come to this temple to seek relief. It is believed that worshipping Ketu here can help mitigate the effects of Ketu Dosha and Kala Sarpa Dosha .
Unique Features: The temple has a separate shrine for Ketu with his consorts. The idol of Ketu is depicted with a flag (Dhvaja) and is believed to have been installed by Ketu himself. The temple's sacred tank is known as Naga Theertham, and the Sthala Vriksham is the Vanni tree. The temple is also associated with the Poompuhar region, which finds mention in ancient Tamil literature including the Silappathikaram and Manimekalai. The temple is revered as a Parihara Sthalam for Ketu-related afflictions .
